What Should I Do? – My Computer is Slow

By admin · Tuesday, March 2nd, 2010 · 2 Comments »

When you start a task on a computer and you have the time to go for a coffee break or a have a nice chat at the water cooler before you get a response, you know that your computer is too slow. Having a computer with a large response time can be really irritating, not to mention the resulting loss in productivity.

There are a few simple steps that you can take yourself to try and solve the problem before looking for a computer technician.

1. Fragmented Hard Drive – A disk that has not been defragmented for a long time can make data retrieval really slow and is one of the chief causes contributing to a slow computer. Running a disk defragmenting utility should fix this problem.

2. Bloated Registry files – If you are not in the habit of scanning your registry files for inconsistencies caused due to installed/removed programs, the registry size can increase. As registry entries are checked periodically, it may contribute to slowness of your computer. Scanning the registry and removing inconsistencies should take care of this.

3. Too Many Programs – Your computer may have many programs that are automatically invoked at startup even if you are not planning to use them. Click the Start button and choose Run. Type in msconfig in the window that appears. Uncheck any programs that you do not use in the Startup tab. This will prevent unnecessary programs from running the next time you startup.

4. Too many Services – When your computer starts up, services required by the Operating System and installed programs are started. Frequently, services used programs that have been uninstalled are also available along with services that are nonessential to you. These services can contribute to the slowdown and can be removed using the Services tab after invoking the msconfig utility.

5. Viruses – Viruses, Trojans, Spyware and Adware can be another major cause of slowdown. A good anti-virus and spyware checker can solve this problem.

6. Increase the RAM – Sometimes insufficient RAM can be the cause of slow computers, so make sure you have at least 512MB – 1GB of RAM installed. This is especially applicable for gaming.

My Computer is Running Slow – Why is My Computer Running Slow?

By admin · Friday, February 26th, 2010 · 3 Comments »

I get asked this question all the time.  My computer is running slow, help!  Why is my computer running slow?  How can I fix a slow computer?  Well most people will tell you – just buy a new computer!  This is bad advice.  Before you spend hundreds or thousands on a new system, why not perform some speed tweaks and get your computer running at peak performance.  These are some steps you can take right now to speed up your computer.  There is also a program available that can perform the steps automatically for you in minutes.

•    Remove all temporary and files not being used.  When your computer’s memory gets overloaded, it can slow down your computer significantly.  Eliminating these useless files will clear up some space and should speed up computer access of programs.

•    Defrag your computer.  Microsoft recommends running a disk defragger once a month.  When is the last time you can one.  If you haven’t and are still wondering “why is my computer running slow”, then this may be part of the problem.

•    Clean up registry errors and other problems.  This is by far the most important step you can take.  About 6 months ago I was also wondering why my computer is running slow.  After scanning my registry and being shocked at all the errors in my system I began to understand.  I was amazed at how much it made my computer run faster.

Before throwing money at upgrades or new equipment, perform these steps here.  There area actually quite a few tweaks you can make to speed up computer performance.  I could not list them all in the limited space here.  But I do use a program that can perform these three tasks and a LOT more.  It has an optimization feature that can detect troubled areas and clean them up for you.  Give it a shot and scan your computer for free below.  You have nothing to lose.

Registry Repair Software Review: Easy Solutions For A Slow Computer

By admin · Friday, February 19th, 2010 · No Comments »

When you are having computer problems, most likely the computers registry is the culprit. The registry used by the windows is basically a kind of database for everything that is present on the computer.

For example, when we start up a program on our PC like our word processor, then a query is sent by the computer to the registry to find out where the software is stored. The registry generally holds all the programs settings and other configurations and for that reason it is extremely necessary to ensure the stability of the system.  This is the time to review your PC safety precautions and have some registry repair software on your hard drive.

The major cause for Windows registry instability can be installation or uninstallation of some poorly programmed software on the computer. This then leads to many problems because the registry is regarded as the framework on which the entire system depends. One weak link can therefore lead to catastrophic errors like system slow down and data loss and corruption. If this happens then it is urgent that you use your registry repair software to fix your system.

Sometimes registry issues can cause very serious errors.  There can be corruption of system files, extreme slowdowns, or your system may not boot up at all.   In this case it becomes extremely important to use your registry repair software to avoid a serious loss of data.   Don’t ignore registry problems – they don’t get better on their own, so download a highly-reviewed registry utility today and protect your valuable data.

7 Reasons You Have A Slow Computer

By admin · Monday, January 11th, 2010 · 6 Comments »

Even if your PC is slow, you no longer have to go in search of a technical support person to fix it. With a little guidance, you can now get rid of most PC problems on your own. There are 7 common reasons why your PC is slow.

Overheating processor

Modern processors generate more heat and when the temperature rises above the level specified via the BIOS, it can be why your PC is slow. Cleaning your PC fan can help. You should also check the fan motor to see if any bearings are loose. Setting the BIOS temperature level to a slightly higher figure than the current one can help when your PC is slow.

Malfunctioning RAM

If the installed RAM is not compatible with your PC or is slower than the optimal level specified in the machine, that can be a reason why your PC is slow. A slow pc is also a sign of defective RAM chips, so you should just check if they are from a reliable manufacturer. An extra fan will help your RAM cool down.

Failing hard disk

Slow access times, irregular boot failures and unexplained blue screens are definite signs of hard disk failure, which can be why your PC is slow. You should run the Error Check utility and then the Disk Defragmenter provided with Windows. The Error Check utility will prompt you to try to repair faulty sectors, while the defragmenter will skip the bad sectors and organize your files appropriately.

Incompatible BIOS settings

If your computer’s BIOS settings are different to the recommended optimal machine configuration, it can be the leading cause why your PC is slow. Run an online search with your motherboard name to find out what the appropriate settings are, and change them accordingly.

Unsupported new drive

If you experience difficulty with accessing a drive you installed recently and your PC is slow, check the IDE interface type on your motherboard. The solution for an incompatible hard drive is a PCI add-on card .

Multiple activated Windows Services

The Windows system does not need most of the applications that start running at start-up. But, since they are automatically enabled, it can affect the performance of your system, in turn becoming a cause for why your PC is slow. Right-click on My Computer and click on Manage, Services and Applications. You can use the Disable button to stop any services you don’t need.

Full hard disk

Whenever you add, modify or delete files in a computer, the hard disk stores the file contents in an unorganized manner. If your PC is slow, then you will need to defragment the hard disk to achieve optimal performance. Defragmenting will organize all the scattered bits and pieces of memory according to relevancy, which means, the data belonging to one file will be located next to each other, rather than all over the disk.

A cluttered registry could also be the reason why your PC is slow. To avoid problems with the Windows Registry, use a registry tool, such as RegCure, to scan, repair and optimize your PC for long-term peak performance.
