I usually don't keep external hard drives plugged into the computer. When it's plugged in the computer is continuously accessing it, which explains the slowdown. If you are using it just to store things, only plug it in when you need it...otherwise try unplugging it and see what happens.
References :
Is there any reason this should slow down my computer???
Okay, I recently bought a SeaGate Free Agent 500 GB external hard drive and ever since I plugged it into my computer, it seems to go slower, a pretty significant amount slower and especially in the Internet. It seems like my computer should be going pretty fast since I recently had to format it due to a virus. It was going fast right after format and up to installing the hard drive.

What can I do?

Thank You
I forgot to add that I'm using Windows Vista Home Premium.
Yeah, that worked. I figured that I could do that, I just would rather plug it in and unplug it and just all of that. Is there anything I can do otherwise?
